Pentose phosphate pathway is an anabolic pathway that utilizes the 6 carbons of glucose to generate five carbon sugars and reducing equivalents. The pathway is parallel to glycolysis that generates NADPH and pentoses (5-carbon sugars). While it does involve oxidation of glucose, its primary role is anabolic rather than catabolic.
