It is a reversible process of glycolysis. iIt is the formation of glucose from non carbohydrate sources. This process only occurs in liver and kidney. It occurs partly in cytoplasm and mitochondria. Gluconeogenesis occur when blood sugar levels are low & liver glycogen is depleted.
Substrates for gluconeogenesis:
1.Amino acid
2.Lactate
3.Glycerol
4.Pyruvate

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF GLUCONEOGENESIS?
- It is the chief source of blood glucose after the first 18 hours fasting
- It removes blood lactate produced by red blood cell and muscle and blood glycerol produced by adipose tissues or absorbed by intestine
