This is the process of breakdown of glycogen into glucose. 'Lysis" means break down. This process occurs in cytosol and is triggered when blood sugar level is low.
Why do this process occur ?
In this process,
Why do this process occur ?
- when an organism needs energy quickly. Energy comes from glucose.
- During muscular or vigorous exercise
- Can do so anaerobically
In this process,
- glycogen stored in liver and muscles are converted first into glucose-1-phosphate then into glucose-6-phosphate.
- two hormones that regulates the process are peptide, glucagon from the pancreas and epinephrine from the adrenal glands.
- Glucagon is released from the pancreas in response to low blood glucose and epinephrine is released in response to a threat or stress. Both hormones act upon enzymes to stimulate glycogen phosphorylase to begin glycogenolysis and inhibit glycogen synthetase (to stop glycogenesis).
- Glucose are hydrolyzed from the chain
- Phosphate group is added at first carbon, C-1
- Then, the phosphate is moved to the C-6 position to give glucose 6-phosphate, a cross road compound.
